HD-DSLR vs 35mm
This one is a keeper! a shootout between the best of HD-DSLR and 35mm. High Definition has come a long way, but we keep saying that 35mm is better; latitude is better, color is better, it just seems more natural. However here is a great opportunity to see where HD really is as these comparisons play out. Where we can see the truth of it; technically and aesthetically – not just from hearsay.
Below is the trailer, check it out; and be sure reserve some time for the actual webisodic series at zacuto.
Zacuto Films presents, “The Great Camera Shootout 2010: a three part web series where gunslinging HD DSLRs face-off against legendary 35mm Film.” Coming March 24, 2010 only at http://www.zacuto.com/shootout.
The webisodic series showcases the top performing hybrid HD-DSLR cameras: Canon: 5D MKII, 7D, 1D, 550D/T2i Rebel, Nikon D3s, Panasonic GH1 and compares the image quality of these cameras against the gold standard of 35mm film. In addition, the Canon 5D MKII test includes the new 24p firmware. “This was an enormous undertaking,” says Steve Weiss, Web Series Director, “and great care was to make this an apples-to-apples test with scientific accuracy behind it.”
Each webisode of the series features various controlled camera assessment tests which include: resolution, latitude, sensitivity, speed & ultra high speed, noise, color & green screen. The battery of tests were administered under strict controls and conducted by Robert Primes ASC, Gary Adcock, Philip Bloom, Jens Bogehegn and colorist Ryan Emerson.
See the reactions to this test following 2K screenings, where “HD DSLR is compared to 35mm Film”. AAAGGGHHH! You got me out of bed for a trailer?! Now I have to wait to see this?!
Oh well. Sounds very cool and I can’t wait to see it. I love how they’ve brought out the experts. Gonna be a big Canon commercial? We’ll see.
What I really wish is that another camera like the Scarlet with its Super35 sensor was in the mix. My main beef with the DSLRs is the fact that they have to be so hacked-together to make them more functional as movie making tools. Getting better every day, but it always seems like we’re making cheating around their design to make them work like a real movie camera. I know that Canon and everyone else is working like mad to meet the huge demand. I think this year will be a big one.
And, of course, we need to remind ourselves that story is still king. I have seen beautiful, bad films made in every amazing format known to man.
Thanks Phillip.

lol, so sorry. The full series looks to be seriously worth it.
I too am looking forward to the Scarlet – although the more beefier Epic may be something worth investing more in.
The so called HD-DSLRs like the Canon 5D MarkII are great because they are not that expensive and are good for agile filming. However, inspite of the fact that the images look good, editing them is not so great – especially when when you need to some keying.
We shall see…
