What’s so Hot about Nuke?

I have been a user of Shake ever since Apple dropped the bomb on their industry leading compositing application. For me it was a Godsend because I could now afford the Visual Effects Software package. However it has been a few years since then during which time Apple has dropped all support of the application (although sneaking an update in – thanks guys) and even stopped listing the Software in their online store. Of course the hope that Apple would replace Shake with the much anticipated Phenomenon has slowly but surely faded away. That leaves one question one question hanging in the air; what next – what application to migrate to that will compare and possible even improve upon Shake’s tools and features?

There are. of course many options out there at varying levels of pricing and functionality. But I would like to find something that was as close to Shake as possible and not priced out of this world. For me that is The Foundry’s Nuke.  Some time ago I wrote a post about Shake and Nuke: Nuke vs Shake where I was already wondering about switching to Nuke. Ok, truth be told I cannot afford it at $3,500 and even if I could I would be wise to rather purchase a good Mac Pro Editing and VFX system first, gulp. One day.

Recently I found out about a Webinar: What’s So Hot About Nuke? Needles to say – I have signed up and looking forward to this – Big Time. Besides the great prizes they have on offer, it looks just the ticket for me and my questions of migrating. In this 90 minute Webinar Steve Wright will be delving into Nuke along the following topics:

  1. Linear lightspace.
  2. High dynamic range (HDR) images.
  3. The precision of 32 bit float.
  4. Nuke’s 3D world.
  5. The power of 3D compositing.
  6. Doing more 3D in 2D.
  7. Three amazing keyers.
  8. Spectacular color correction.
  9. A thousand channels.
  10. Compositing log images made easy.
  11. Multi-pass cgi compositing.
  12. How Nuke integrates with 3D production.
  13. Faster more efficient VFX production pipelines.

Great stuff – just a few days to go, and who knows; maybe I get to win the big prize of a Nuke License with one year support.
