What will follow Twitter?

Twitter has broken the rules; the rule that says that feature packing is what people want. Look at FaceBook; a fully featured bouquet of apps, pages, tools etc. Is that what we want? I know that when I started with FaceBook that I was all app bewildered – now I ignore most of them, removed most of them and don’t pay attention to the rest.

Twitter seems to be redefining our need for simplicity. Sure there is a multitude of webapps out there that make use of the Twitter API. But isn’t that the win? A simple service that can be optionally extended. I know that I would not have liked Twitter if it came bundled as a webpage with 10 different apps on it.

Yet if Twitter is a simple status update, what else would be simplified that could follow Twitter’s footsteps? GPS tracking? Real time audio feeds? Real time photo feeds? RSS my body’s health levels? Ha ha ha.

Actually Flickr is very popular at the moment, I wonder is there was something about it that could be leveraged? Something that creates connections fast and easily. Because whatever the next great think will be, it will be what makes Twitter so successful – connections. We all want to belong to something bigger than ourselves or to feel important and Twitter facilitates this.

  1. Yeah, i have thought about joining Twitter but ag i dont know if i want to. I am on MySpace and Facebook and it all just takes up so much time and i am also scared to get attached because when Facebook came out i was one of the last people on it because i thought it was pointless because i was on MySpace all ready. But i had to join because EVERYONE went from MySpace to FACEBOOK!! But yea all i use Facebook and MySpace for now is just to say happy birtday to my friends. I cant even remember the last time i uploaded new pics!!! But yeah, should u join twitter i dont know, i prop wont.

  2. Good insight! You’re exactly right… Twitter is Facebook simplified. This is something I’ve known for awhile but I’ve never really thought about it for more than a second. The way you put it… clear and to the point.

Kudos! I love Twitter for all the reasons you described!

  3. Yea Phil. I only use Facebook for spaming my blog. I don’t have time for all the fluff

  4. I never joined MySpace, so I can’t comment on why people left. I can say that Facebook – to me – is just one big hording station. I don’t really use it that often anymore other that to create Events for church and spam everyone with my blog posts ;-)

As for Twitter, it is probably different for everyone, but for me it is about connection and reach. I can engage and connection with over 2 million people in the proverbial pyramid scheme setup. Besides the stupid comments about bathing my son and the weather, I leverage the connectivity to reach people with my blogs and find cool people to learn from. But building connections is an ongoing thing that requires time and effort.
Everyone wants to be connected to something and I think that the Twitter guys know this. I also think that every other fad that follows Twitter will use the same basic desire to gain popularity.
