This is the third part of a series highlighting the Stuff I can only dream about. The Filmmaking equipment (Hardware, Software, Services).
Now over (for a short while) to Software. I am a Shake Compositor, but Shake is not longer supported by Apple, so what should I move to?
There are many options out there. Now with Adobe’s CS5 release; After Effects is looking more and more enticing, but I much prefer node based compositing. There are many options for Compositing applications, most notable being:
- Nuke
- After Effects
- Smoke
- Toxic
- Fusion
But there is something about Nuke that does it for me.
Which would you prefer? Did I miss any?

Great blog! I myself use After effects. I think that’s sort of the norm for beginners. I’ve never used programs like Nuke or Fusion but hear good things about them. Still, it’s what your used to I think.

thanks.
True – I make an effort to mess around with different trial versions, and each time is feels so odd. I am so used to the tools I use that I find my own ability governed by it.
