The New and Awesome iMac

Is this it, is this the iMac that makes editing real on an iMac?

new_iMacSporting a 27″ screen that will be enough for editing interfaces like Final Cut Pro. A Quad Processor and memory expandable to 16GB that will allow Motion to breath a sigh of relief.  But will I were to obtain this iMac would I be able to edit the footage on my external drive? Alas, the answer is no – for my drives are external SATA2 drives. Will the FW800 be enough? It may be. Although if the new FW 1600/3200 standard were to be incorporated soon; then yes, I think it would be enough (that is if I could set up an external RAID with the single FW port).

The ATI Radeon HD 4850 graphics processor with 512MB of GDDR3 memory that comes with the 27″ iMac – I wonder how well this would perform with a number on animated paint stroke in Motion’s semi 3D space. And is this on the list of supported cards for Color? I can’t find that list, anyone know?

Quite honestly, I would prefer a 16 core(Hexadecagon) MacPro with 8GB RAM or if I were to stay mobile;  a 17″ quad core Mac Book with the ExpressCard slot. Hmmm, I wonder if they will bring these out soon.

But the ability to connect to an external RAID is important, especially for editing HD content; connect to something like CalDigit’s HDPro, and it does not appear that the new iMac can do that. pity
