The Movie Goer's Conviction

Recently I posted a comment in response to a review of WatchMen.

To be completely honest I really, really want to watch this movie – I love the hero stores, especially those adapted from the comic book or graphic novel (besides the cool special effects).
But I gotta say, I am a bit convicted here. The excessive violence, nudity and sex that is reported to be in the movie grinds against my conscience.

Sorry, there is just no way any of it can be justified.

As a Christian I should be staying far away from that kind of stuff. True, it is good to be relevant, but then again I don’t take drugs just to be able to identify with drug users – ok that’s a bit extreme but the effect can be just the same on your soul.

I have chosen not to watch it, Aggggggggggggggr.

Is it the right thing? I don’t know.
Does it matter? I think so.

What do you think?

it is a bit of a hard one.. i haven’t seen sin city so I can’t comment. i enjoyed the watchmen comic quite a bit.. i can’t recall any nudity in the comic so i somewhat regretted having to sit through the one particular scene I can recall. just unneccessary. violence in illustration does tend to become more unpalatable in motion and i did grimace a couple of times. besides the obvious problems of violence and sex I thought that the movie lost a lot of the gravitas of the comic… i mean the original story was deconstructing a bunch of comic book traditions and just worked better within the confines of the page. plus a few poor casting decisions. having said all that it is visually impressive and tries as best as it can to humanize its superheroes. the movie doesn’t really stand for anything though, it’s pretty post-modern. anyway I’ll stop now!

The Graphic Novel is MUCH, Much better. Read it. the movie is a nice extra, but not essential. I highly recommend the graphic novel though… It’s not super-heroey in the Batman, Superman Sense… its more real and the way it was written was brilliant.
