Open Source Compositor

November 8, 2011 — 1 Comment

There was a search term that brought someone to my blog: “synapse is a node based compositor” that certainly piqued some interest; what with the words synapse and compositor used in the same search phrase. So I did the same search and it brought me to this. Now this is quite cool.

Ok, I was disappointed at first when I saw that there was no OSX option, but the linux option got me thinking … VMWare or something like that.
With my Lion incompatible Shake 4.1 holding me back I am keen to see how this works, and who knows maybe there is a OSX version on the horizon, given that this is in early development phase.
Check out the Videos … Continue Reading…

Being a GenArts Sapphire user (Shake) it is awesome to see what other people do with their plugins, especially production houses. Ok, it is more than just the plugins – it a whole lot of other stuff which is made up of masses of talent and determination.

GenArts Sapphire

June 1, 2010 — 2 Comments

This is by far the best prize I have ever won. Yeah, I won the GenArts Sapphire plugins for Shake just for watching the GenArts Reels (and filling in a small form). The prize is so great it even beat the 5 out of 6 numbers I got in the lotto over 5 years ago. However, besides the monetary value of of the prize there is the usability value; I will find great use for this both in my personal projects as well as the stuff I do for Church.
I did play around with the trial version a while back for a music video I did, unfortunately I can’t show that because of copyright restrictions. But I have already started messing around with the plugins, here is my first creative test :)

This is the third part of a series highlighting the Stuff I can only dream about. The Filmmaking equipment (Hardware, Software, Services).

Now over (for a short while) to Software. I am a Shake Compositor, but Shake is not longer supported by Apple, so what should I move to? Continue Reading…

Was looking around for some GenArts Sapphire Plugins Videos on Vimeo and found this one below.Very Cool. I signed up for a 2 week demo for the plugins to run on Shake – looking forward to trying them out on the Music Video we are shooting this Sunday.

Know of any other videos that make use of the Sapphire plugins?

Making A Light saber

November 9, 2009 — Leave a comment

Love Light Sabers.
Even tried compositing some my self, check here and tell me what you think, be gentle I did this years ago:

I made that after watching the Ryan vs Dorkman 2 DVD, well worth the small investment.
But here’s  a great tutorial by Apple Shake Guru.

Also there are some fantastic pointers in the Encyclopedia of Visual Effects – one of my favorite books.

Some time back we had the pleasure and convenience of a studio. It was cool and quick. But I have to say that it could have been better:

Filmed with a Canon XH A1 with inferior lighting and edge enhancing. Keyed in Shake. It could have been way better if:

  • Lighting was 3500% better
  • Edge detail was reduced
  • if SDI out was used to leverage the 4:2:2 color sampling

Anyway, I did not go thru that much effort to obtain this result, but needless to say ….

Also, man it is irritating that the gamma is increased somewhere in the pipeline to compress the result to vimeo. Hmmm, I manually fixed that in the compression settings – but I did not get the result I desired.

When I started the fine art of Keying I did much searching for good tutorials. In the end I happened upon Andrew Shanks from Creative Cow.

Andrew isa Visual Effects Compositor/Supervisor based in Auckland, New Zealand“. Very Cool. So I reckon that he knows about keying.

These are the video tutorials that I keep close at hand with the process and principle that I apply pretty much to all my keying projects in Shake. They are based on DV examples, but can be applied to HDV footage, with slight modification if you have the pleasure of working with 4:2:2.

Editing Tools

April 15, 2009 — 2 Comments

tools

These are the main tools I use when working with Video for Church, myself or the general videos I put up on this blog or the others I write for. They may be over kill for Social Media,  but I am finding that the skills, knowledge and experience in these are proving to be very good.

What are some of the Video Editing or motion Graphics tools that you use for Social Media?

Thought that this may be quite appropriate since we are going to be filming more of this with in a month.
And it looks like we may just get to do it within a studio – better lights, camera and Green Screen – niccccce.
The one below was done with a Sony EX1, KinoFlos, DedoLights, Shake, FCP and lots of Time and Patience.
