First Public Footage of a Working Red Scarlet

First public footage of a working Red Scarlet Fixed Lens camera.
Awesome!!!
Would love to play around with one of these babies even with a fixed lens and it’s 2/3″ sensor.
Thanks to Stu Maschwitz’s Scarlet post on Pro Lost.

This is the very first public footage of a working Red Scarlet Fixed Lens camera. I’m currently at Red Studios helping with the Santa Fe 3d Workshop with Geoff Boyle. Just as I am sitting there…in comes Jarred with a WORKING Red Scarlet 8X fixed camera! Naturally I was dying to hold the camera. As Jarred passed it to me, he told me I was the first public person to hold a working Red Scarlet. Let me tell you folks, it is real and is working. The Scarlet I was holding had the 5inch lcd touchscreen. The lens gear ring which can be set to zoom, iris or focus is buttery smooth. QUALITY. The electronic zoom works like a charm. I used the up-down rocker on the camera to zoom in on a Jeep in the parking lot (though I was “Mr. Shakey” due to the sheer excitement of finally getting to hold the Red Scarlet.) Justin O’Neill and I got to see it for a mere brief moment and off it went back to the vault. This should be comforting to those who may fear that RED wouldn’t have time for the Scarlet with all the Epic buzz going on. This gives me more confidence that the Red Scarlet is definitely around the corner. I have been really lucky to have held both the Epic and Scarlet. The Scarlet is lighter in weight than the Epic even with the fixed lens. This is due to the Scarlet body being more narrow. The weight felt very good and the camera felt rugged. Touch screen controls were functional. Enjoy!

10 Top Posts: September 2010

September was a great month in terms of visits to SynapticLight. There was a massive spike in traffic in August because of an video I posted – which amounted to over 10,000 views on YouTube and Vimeo (pity I am not translating that into blog visits.) This month almost achieved the same with a number of different posts. With discussions of new HDSLR cameras and RED announcements, and with great videos demonstrating how HDSLR can be leveraged to make great imaged. A great HDSLR month – once again – I hope to be posting videos and discussions on my entry into the HDSLR world very soon :)

RED EPIC at IBC 2010

The day that this camera is demonstrated here in Cape Town South Africa, I will be there. This is the camera I dream of. Sure I am planning to go HDSLR, but that is a budget thing; if I the money I would have no hesitation to go RED.

New REDCINE-X offers 3D Support

redcinex

REDCINE-X is a software program converts REDCODE RAW data into RGB video – kind of a telecine process used to digitize film. It also provides basic one light image processing and color correction. It is also free, which is quite amazing considering what it can do. For more information on what REDCINE-X is: What are REDCINE-X and RED ALERT!?
RED just announced a new version, highlighting the new 3D support and Trim R3D. Other interesting features being REDlog film and 64bit builds. If you are a RED user, what stood out for you? Here’s the full list:

Canon 4K

Canon

Just days ago Canon displayed a Concept 4K camera. There will be many changes when it is released – I wonder when but it is very interesting that Canon is entering this High Definition Market. Canon is probably leveraging the increased interest in HD-SLR Cameras (Video capable DSLRs). Currently their is nothing between the current crop of HD-SLRs and a fully fledged 4K camera – well, not until RED Scarlet comes to market.
However, there are questions:

  • What price will this come in at? $5000? or more?
  • What codec will be used?
  • What bit rate?
  • What sacrifices are being made to get a 4K sequence of images from a 2/3″ sensor.

Regardless of that, it is exciting. RED Scarlet will probably come out before the Canon 4K, but that may be doubtful because RED’s focus is on the EPIC first.
All I can say is: Bring it on.

RED Scarlet Attacks

RED Scarlet Auto Focus

RED launch a nice, short shot across the bow of RED fans. It was a reminder that Scarlet was still on the go, that things were moving and that RED Scarlet fans were not forgotten.

RED 3D Prism Rig

RED Mirror 3D

Not being someone who has worked with 3D, let along 3D camera rigs, I have to say that the Prism/Mirror rig was surprising to see. It must have been my assumption that the cameras should be orientated in the same manner as the human eyes are. Well, I was wrong. There are other ways, like this 3D Rig from RED. Besides the fact that is it awesome to see a RED camera in use for 3D capture.
