Archives For ipad

One can already do this with the Canon software bundled with their DSLRs. Having it available on the iPad, however, is quite novel. Not sure what Nikon has in terms of Software – they probably have something.
OnOne Software has this really cool iPad app called DSLR Camera Remote HD – it looks very useful.

Now all that is needed to make it better is to pair wireless access to the DSLR Camera Remote HD with Okii’s USB Follow Focus then it will be beyond awesome.
Imagine a preview of Live View on the iPad – fullscreen – with overlay controls that you can dial in through the touch interface.
Nice.
For now you can get this OnOne iPad app for just $50 – pretty much a no brainer if you have an iPad – especially with that Auto bracketing feature.

Sketchpad is a storyboard for the iPad. It’s for an artist and filmmakers who want a convenient, visual way to plan out their ideas for their next film. Its feels, functions and design just like the concept of storyboarding that gives you an experience unlike anything you’ve ever experienced.

This looks to be a great tool for filmmakers, especially independant filmakers.
Storyboarding has always been a stumbling block for me, I am not a good sketcher and once I have made a mistake it is not easy to fix (mess at the best of times). I could use a normal PC/Mac app but that is not always practical.

Enter Sketchpad.

Here’s an app that offers great tools and what looks to be a great interface.

Now this is awesome, worth bringing the iPad into you post production workflow.

Another good looking mobile video editor. Now if you could connect a decent video camera to your iPad and stream it directly then you could really get going. lol, well, the more I think about the more I think that the iPhone is just so much more convenient to carry around. The screen is just so small to edit video on, however I would just be top and tailing the video – more than anything. Continue Reading…

If you are looking for information on the Apple iPad; thoughts, applications and suggestions, here are a few articles from bloggers. Although I have a slant towards filmmaking and church, most entries here will be relevant. Also I have not been able to try the iPad out or the apps, for that matter, the device is not available in my country as yet.

iPad Video Editor

ReelDirector

Very interesting. At first I thought there is just no way to edit video on the iPad, but here you decide after watching the video. I have to say – I would love to edit video like that, yet maybe on a bigger screen and with lots of multi touch gestures – think Minority Report ;)

Featured as BEST APP on Apple’s Rewind 2009 list, ReelDirector is the first and only app to bring real video editing to mobile platform.
Features

A multi-touch color correction controller for Cineform’s First Light. The concept is great, in fact there is no reason why such an interface can’t be used for Final Cut Pro and Color.

Final Draft

Using industry standards and easy formatting this app will be very useful for both writing a script while on your travels and updating during production (maybe for the continuity person)

This one seems to be more for the actor, helping them prepare for rehearsals and auditions.

Well the first question is: Will someone create a Video Editing Application for the iPad for $9.99 (is that a limit?). I think that Apple will: a scaled down version of iMovie or something. Or can you perform the editing by means of an online editing service like JayCut (by the way – what ever happened to JumpCut?).

Next Question: Can the hardware do it?  Lets take a look at the specifications:

  • Processor: 1GHz Apple A4 custom-designed, high-performance, low-power system-on-a-chip
  • Capacity: 16GB, 32GB, or 64GB flash drive
  • Audio:
    • Frequency response: 20Hz to 20,000Hz
    • Audio formats supported: AAC (16 to 320 Kbps), Protected AAC (from iTunes Store), MP3 (16 to 320 Kbps), MP3 VBR, Audible (formats 2, 3, and 4), Apple Lossless, AIFF, and WAV
  • Video:
    • Support for 1024 by 768 pixels with Dock Connector to VGA Adapter; 576p and 480p with Apple Component AV Cable; 576i and 480i with Apple Composite AV Cable
    • H.264 video up to 720p, 30 frames per second, Main Profile level 3.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats
  • Connectivity:
    • Wi-Fi
    • Bluetooth
    • USB through Dock Connector

It has been sometime since I have edited on my 1.6GHz Single Processor G5 PowerMac. Is this customized 1GHz A4 processor any better? I am sure it could handle a bit of DV work with minimal effects. Watching a compressed HD movie (not > 4K) won’t be a problem according to the features.
But that is not the problem. The problem is the maximum of 64GB Flash Drive – where would you store the files? Could they be accessed through bluetooth, wi-fi or the Dock Connector? Maybe.
I am not an expert in comparing the hardware of the Apple iPad to another device of similar processing capabilities. Also I don’t even know what kind of OS will be running on the Apple iPad – the same as the iPhone?

One thing is for certain is that the possibility is not far off.

Yet for now the iPad could be a great interface for specific applications already running on a MPB, Mac Pro or other computer. I for one am looking forward to an app that will provide touchscreen interface controls to Apple Color.
What do you think? Is is possible? Now, in the future?

iPadThe Apple iPad as it stands (or lies) now does not seem to be capable enough to be a video editing system. I can’t refute it’s usefulness as a great tool to assists pre-production, production and post. Yet the potential that this new interface is huge.

It won’t do as a stand alone system for editing. You certainly could not take it to the coffee shop for some quick editing could you.

However. Continue Reading…
