Dear Santa, my #HDSLR wishes

ChristmasPhoto

It is almost Christmas time and I have been a good boy :)
and there are some things that I wish would be under my Christmas tree this year.
Here is that list, feel free to share yours too.
It’s not a stupid ridiculous list, it is an enhancement on what I am already saving up for.

Ok let me re-phrase that – it is a bit ridiculous – unless I win the lotto, ha ha ha. But we are entitled to dream right?

  • Is there something that you are wishing for? Hoping to be under the Christmas Tree this year?
  • See anything in this list you like?
  • Anything missing?

Please let me know in the comments :)

Win a Canon 60D – Western Australia

bell_02

Another cool Canon 60D Competition, this one restricted to residents of Western Australia and being 16 years or older. See here for the rules (pdf).
To enter, visit www.thewest.com.au/thebelltower and submit your photo of the Bell Tower. It appears that the photo does not have to be recent; just within the last 10 yrs.

For interest’s sake the other Canon 60D competition is one restricted to Citizens or Permanent Residents at least 18 years of age, living in South & South East Asia.
This competition is part of the celebration of the 10 year anniversary of Perth’s iconic and major tourist attraction, the Bell Tower.
If you enter let me know.
And if you know of any other HDSLR competitions. I would love an opportunity to have a go :)

Anatomy of an HDSLR Rig

HDSLR Rig

With my plans to go HSLR in the next month or so – wish it was today – I get to read up and watch a lot of videos on HDSLR rig components. Seeing Zacuto’s zfinderev and Redrockmicro’s microEVF send shivers down my spine. Tonight I get to go to an indieLAB Cape Town meet up at Media Hive where these kind of rigs will be demonstrated, so expect photos to be taken :)
But what makes up a basic HDSLR rig Continue Reading…

What is HDSLR

lens

Is this the new era of filmmaking or is it just a temporary storm that will pass away? One thing that is for sure is the fact that HDSLRs are enabling the masses to jump into the waters of HD filmmaking. But what are they jumping into?

HDSLR in a Nutshell

HDSLR is, in a nutshell, a Video capable DSLR. With DSLR being Digital SLR and SLR being Single Lens Reflex. Click those links to find out more and stare at diagrams.

RED EPIC at IBC 2010

The day that this camera is demonstrated here in Cape Town South Africa, I will be there. This is the camera I dream of. Sure I am planning to go HDSLR, but that is a budget thing; if I the money I would have no hesitation to go RED.

Production and Workflow : Standing Firm

Standing Firm

Standing Firm is a Christian Film produced by Praise Pictures and Directed by Kyle Prohaska.

What I like about this Film is that it is a high quality product made independently on a low budget. Of course there were many willing volunteers. Also the film was captured with a single sub $4000 camera. I am looking forward to a Christian Film put together with a Canon 5D MarkII. Here is some more trivia.

After the Story/Plot there is a brief outline of the Production and Post Production equipment and Software used. The actual Trailer is available at the end of the post. Please feel free to add your thoughts.

Canon 4K

Canon

Just days ago Canon displayed a Concept 4K camera. There will be many changes when it is released – I wonder when but it is very interesting that Canon is entering this High Definition Market. Canon is probably leveraging the increased interest in HD-SLR Cameras (Video capable DSLRs). Currently their is nothing between the current crop of HD-SLRs and a fully fledged 4K camera – well, not until RED Scarlet comes to market.
However, there are questions:

  • What price will this come in at? $5000? or more?
  • What codec will be used?
  • What bit rate?
  • What sacrifices are being made to get a 4K sequence of images from a 2/3″ sensor.

Regardless of that, it is exciting. RED Scarlet will probably come out before the Canon 4K, but that may be doubtful because RED’s focus is on the EPIC first.
All I can say is: Bring it on.

Courageous uses RED One

Courageous

I remember the first Movie by Sherwood Pictures; Flywheel. It was filmed on a budget of only $20,000. There were a few lighting glitches in some two camera shots but it was very well done for a first time film by a church.
Sherwood Pictures has stepped up and improved with every movie since Flywheel. You may argue that the Christian story lines are too fabricated, predictable or too clean – but you can’t argue that these guys are pushing Christian forward and getting better all the time.
Their next film; Courageous, stands out for me because of the cameras that they are using; RED One Cameras. Continue Reading…

RED 3D Prism Rig

RED Mirror 3D

Not being someone who has worked with 3D, let along 3D camera rigs, I have to say that the Prism/Mirror rig was surprising to see. It must have been my assumption that the cameras should be orientated in the same manner as the human eyes are. Well, I was wrong. There are other ways, like this 3D Rig from RED. Besides the fact that is it awesome to see a RED camera in use for 3D capture.
