Sonnet Tempo Plight

tempoexpresscard34

I have been using the Sonnet Tempo ExpressCard34 now for about 2 years now.
When it is working it is great – I use it for two External 1TB drives I use with Video Editing.
However, I always struggle to maintain consistent usability.
If the drives do not connect and wiggling the connection does not work then I power off the card and re-insert,
after which one of 3 things happen

  • it works
  • it kills the WiFi connection, requiring a reboot to fix
  • causes a grey screen of death(Kernal Panic)

Now I am running Snow Leopard 10.6.3 v1.1 with SonnetTech’s tsata_e2p_e342p_mac_v1.1.11u driver

but that is the end of it – it no longer works, there is no drive activity any more on either of the drives. With Snow Leopard there is no Grey Screen of death but there is still a WiFi death except this time it is not obvious until I start wondering why there is no internet connection.

I am wondering about either trying the Pro solution or to try Caldigit’s VR option with a new SATA Express card (although I would opt for Caldigit’s HDPro2 if I had the option)

Either way it is rather irritating because I do not want to worry about this kind of maintenance when I would rather be saving up for a Mac Pro.

What do you think? Got a better solution that would be cheaper?
