Every film has a journey – at least one. This Journey is a first for us as a team; the four of us
This is Part 1 of a 4 Part series on my thoughts and experiences concerning the Short 1 min Film we put together for the skarlets competition:
- Part 1: Red Box Spider Journey: The Idea
- Part 2: Red Box Spider Journey: Pre-Production
- Part 3: Red Box Spider Journey: Production
- Part 4: Red Box Spider Journey: Post-Production

Here we are taking a break after filming a great big spider. Thomas is missing, pity; it was a great day with a lot of learning to be done. In this picture we are posing in the hope that we could get sponsors from the bear makers for making the film – ha ha ha. That was really a joke hey.
We needed something to focus on – something that would drive our efforts in unison. Where we would learn and experience filmmaking as a team. I suggested the skarlets competition because how difficult can it be to make a one minute film
besides if we had to win then we would have a really cool camera to further our endeavors: a 8x Fixed Lens RED Scarlet.
So over the next while I am going to talk about how we came up with the idea, pre-production, production, post-production; along with all the lessons learned during this wonderful experience.
Come join me in this journey wont you? Lets start
The Idea
John Werge came up with the idea in passing while discussing other ideas. It never really took off because – I mean – who can organize a Tarantula? let alone handle it. Step in Thomas, our made man of connections; Agent Zero, organizer. Thomas used to stay next to an Insect Wrangler for Films and yes, he was willing to allow us to handle a Tarantula – gulp. Fortunately John Smith our Stuntman and Stunt Co-ordinator by profession could handle the Spider (since the wrangler would not be available). Just a note – Tarantulas are not really poisonous.

wow
well done
the video was awesome, hope you guys win.
Looking forward to more updates
of course we will win – ha ha ha
