Red Box Spider Journey: Production

This is Part 3 of a 4 Part series on my thoughts and experiences concerning the Short 1 min Film we put together for the skarlets competition:

Here’s some of the things with did and used for out 1 min feature film -lol. It was quite fun; next time I need to get someone to take more photos.

We used two Cameras:

  • Panasonic AG-DVX100BE
  • Panasonic NV-GS400

and of course Lights:

  • 3 x 150W Dedolights

Here’s how crazy it was, a Stuntman, a huge spider and a brave girl:

This was the really fun part – lighting and filming a huge Tarantula  that has a mind of it’s own, gulp. lol.

I knew that I had to light Kate; out brave actress, well enough for the critical scenes as well as the Red Box that the spider crawls out of and back in. Although in post it was evident that I did not light the box enough.

As far as handling the spider went – that was actually ok. He, umm, or she, was not always co-operative and required prompting, but in the end we go our shots.  Once or twice we thought that the Tarantula was going to make a run for it. Tarantula on Hand

It was quite a small room to film in, but we got the angles that we needed. Ok, maybe not a shot from outside with crickets sounding loud outside, diminishing when cutting to the interior shots.
We were a hand short in the admin department, especially when it came to recording timecodes – I lost my way in that area as I busied myself with lighting and filming.
Fun times.

Hectic, filmed a Tarantula? Wasn't Kate afraid?
