Red Box Spider Journey: Post-Production

This is Last Part of a 4 Part series on my thoughts and experiences concerning the Short 1 min Film we put together for the skarlets competition:

Feel free to watch the entry and vote and post comments :)

Here are my thoughts and experience on the Post Production side, as well as the conclusion, please tell me what you think :)

Software Used:

  • Final Cut Studio 2
  • Reason 3
  • Audacity

It was pleasing that things fit together quite nicely, all things considering. To be honest I was a tad bit lazy during production and was not strict in recording in-out counts with useful notes. I also captured everything in one go – bad bad bad. I should have used the list I had and batch captured, hmmm. That was I would have seen what I needed immediately. Instead I has to scrub the entire timeline for the necessary sections – every time.

Live and learn.

But stupid, since I have done the right thing many times and have always been amazed at how useful this approach is.

Night for day Color FxFor creating the Day to Night I tried various filters, but in the end I had to make my own variation to keep the color of the box intact. And not loose detail of the spider. However I did manage to perform a massive facepalm maneuver destroying the ColorFx folder by saving too quickly and ignoring the warning that I had not specified a filename. Now I ask you; should it not have used the original filename?
The ColorFx I used (see image) was just a slight modification of the simple Night for Day effect found in Apple Color. I tried other Night for Day filters for Final Cut Pro, by they just made the scene blue and did not offer enough control to balance color and detail while making the scene look realistic. I must say that the video looks way better in full light, pity.

Music was initially a bit of a bother because we did not have the right software and I was not willing to allow any part of the project to be tainted by piracy. So there was a delay in this. But in the end we were able to commence and our good friendĀ Gareth was able to put together his own composition with sound effects. Very good.

Conclusion
It really was a fun project, we learned a lot.

I do hope we win, a Scarlet 2/3″ 8x Fixed would go a long way in helping us obtain our dream :) So please vote for us

Since the deadline has been moved we will most certainly beĀ  submitting other entries.
