Poll: What do you think of Christian Film

film-cross

Everyone has there own opinion on Christian Film; it has come a long way that is sure. There are some that would argue that we should not consider it as a genre and others say that we judge it separately because of it’s genre. Personally I like the way it has progressed, there is still some way to go, and it is sure to be hard because not many Producers/Production companies are keen to invest enough into it. Having said that; What do you think?

I think many ‘Christian’ films get bogged down when they try to be a method of message delivery. Once a film starts getting preachy, or when an actor’s lines are obviously meant for the people in the theater instead of the person in the scene with them, it losses my interest.

A much better approach is to tell good stories and let the viewers find the meaning.

Some of the best Christian films that I’ve seen, in terms of impact, never were filmed with that focus in mind.

I agree. Besides, is it not better to ‘preach’ through the characters actions, when they are faced with difficult choices and when their character is tested. It is kind of implied and not obvious, but when you get too obvious then you might insult people’s intelligence.

Like Chad said, Christian films tend to fall short because they were written with an evangelistic agenda in mind. Evangelists are generally not screenwriters or film directors. Evangelists are so caught up in Jesus (which is a good thing btw) that they forget to tell the story or invest in the actors. Don’t get me wrong, I think an evangelist could put together a great documentary film, but that’s not the same as telling a story.

I tend to agree that many Christian films I have seen tend to miss telling a great story or defining conflict without being preachy. The best film I have seen with a Christian message has been “Amazing Grace.” This kind of story is great film making. IMHO.

Most Christian film that I’ve ever seen is so low budget that not even Lifetime would carry it.. Poor audio, video and acting..

And like many of the comments said they tend to be thinking too much about the impact of the film, and not enough on the quality..

Yes, Churches like North Point Community Church etc, put a lot of money and effort into their Sunday morning Service because they want people to come back. If only that was the idea for Christian films – granted it is hard to find money, but if you want people to watch it again or suggest it to friends then excellence is paramount.

I came very close to answering “It Sucks”, but I’m hopeful that a new generation of storytellers will rise up. In full disclosure I don’t really like “Christian” Music – I believe that we as followers of Christ, should not have to label our art. People should be able to see Christ in everything that we do. I’m also really tired of films with really low production value, cheesy scripts, and horrid acting.
