Ok, maybe after this, things can’t be ‘back in the day’ any more – but I’ll continue to show case the work we have done for church
.
As I explained in the last Back in the Day about Intersect – it was a community based project in partnership with the community, Metro Kids Africa and North Point Community Church. Here, James from Metro Kids Africa gives a review of the cool stuff that transpired over the time of the project.
Back in the Day: Intersect Review
From Responsibility to Accountability
It really does not matter where you come from; church, non-profit, corporate or even small business. The people under you or the people that follow you will only take the initiative or go the extra mile if they have a stake in the matter. Most people are willing to take responsibility for something; they will be keen to do something for some form of benefit be it pay or recognition, but the non-delivery or non-completion of a task will not is not an issue because there is no ownership. When you have ownership you are at least accountable to yourself to complete the task as successfully as you can. Continue Reading…
O Come Let Us Adore Him
This here is actually a bit of fun
In spite of the title, well it is fun Adoring a cool God like mine ![]()
Anyway here’s the thing; I saw this post on a friend’s blog and decided to also take part in the little gag. Incidentally my friend; Ron, is also in my Community Group as is Julie who also responded to the post in a similar manner.
we have cool peeps in our Community Group – Word!
Here are the rules:
- Put your iPod or other music player on shuffle.
- For each question, press the NEXT button to get your answer.
- You must write that song name down no matter how silly it sounds.
- Tag friends who might enjoy doing this as well as the person you got this from. So if you are keen to also play this game, post it like this and let me know.

Contemplating the 1 year plan
So here I am, wondering, thinking, contemplating; where do I wanna be in a years time? Hmmm. Sunday is the first birthday of this blog, what will be different when the second year swings by? What do I want to be different in a year? Or more importantly:
What steps can I take and what things can I put in place to make the plan happen?
- I reckon that next year I would like to see:
- This blog self hosted
- Win over 100 people that subscribe to this blog
- Do another short movie
- Build a better video team at church and empower the current team more
- I would like to see our church switching two camera feeds with lower 3rd overlays to two screens.
How can I reach these goals, being involved in making them happen and finding the support to reach them? Hmmm. I think I will start with a manifesto and a plan. Watch this space for just that
I will be talking about each as we go along.
What will follow Twitter?

Twitter has broken the rules; the rule that says that feature packing is what people want. Look at FaceBook; a fully featured bouquet of apps, pages, tools etc. Is that what we want? I know that when I started with FaceBook that I was all app bewildered – now I ignore most of them, removed most of them and don’t pay attention to the rest.
Twitter seems to be redefining our need for simplicity. Sure there is a multitude of webapps out there that make use of the Twitter API. But isn’t that the win? A simple service that can be optionally extended. I know that I would not have liked Twitter if it came bundled as a webpage with 10 different apps on it.
Yet if Twitter is a simple status update, what else would be simplified that could follow Twitter’s footsteps? GPS tracking? Real time audio feeds? Real time photo feeds? RSS my body’s health levels? Ha ha ha.
Actually Flickr is very popular at the moment, I wonder is there was something about it that could be leveraged? Something that creates connections fast and easily. Because whatever the next great think will be, it will be what makes Twitter so successful – connections. We all want to belong to something bigger than ourselves or to feel important and Twitter facilitates this.

Bluescreen – Canon XH A1
Some time back we had the pleasure and convenience of a studio. It was cool and quick. But I have to say that it could have been better:
Filmed with a Canon XH A1 with inferior lighting and edge enhancing. Keyed in Shake. It could have been way better if:
- Lighting was 3500% better
- Edge detail was reduced
- if SDI out was used to leverage the 4:2:2 color sampling
Anyway, I did not go thru that much effort to obtain this result, but needless to say ….
Also, man it is irritating that the gamma is increased somewhere in the pipeline to compress the result to vimeo. Hmmm, I manually fixed that in the compression settings – but I did not get the result I desired.

Back in the Day: Intersect
Here is a promotional video I did for our church last year. Intersect was a partnership between a group from North Point Community Church, Metro Kids Africa and our church, We basically went into the townships and helped fix a few things, engage, entertain and offer some great gifts to the kids. Although the event was over a short period of time; Metro Kids Africa continues to engage and teach the kids.
Shake Keying Tutorials
When I started the fine art of Keying I did much searching for good tutorials. In the end I happened upon Andrew Shanks from Creative Cow.
Andrew is “a Visual Effects Compositor/Supervisor based in Auckland, New Zealand“. Very Cool. So I reckon that he knows about keying.
These are the video tutorials that I keep close at hand with the process and principle that I apply pretty much to all my keying projects in Shake. They are based on DV examples, but can be applied to HDV footage, with slight modification if you have the pleasure of working with 4:2:2.
- Smoothing DV Jaggies
- Keying 101: Edge, Core and Garbage Mattes
- Keying 101: Light Wrap and Edge Blending
- Keying 101: Spill Suppression
