Handheld Hollywood, whom I have posted about before for their cool app; ReelDirector have a great list of filmmaking apps that can be use on various plateforms and devices. So, here we go :

Here is a very cool low low budget short film – shot with a Canon T2i. The short was submitted to a Film Festival with the theme of Speechless.
What appealed to me the most was that this was a DIY low budget film shot on the Canon T2i. A really low budget of $247
wow
I was very keen to just post this short film as is, however, I had a chance to ask Patrick Prejusa the Writer/Director/Editor a couple questions about the Film, check them out after the video.

Visual Impact SA

January 21, 2011 — Leave a comment

Visual Impact SA has confidently stepped out into the world of Social Networking, not just connecting but also engaging. It has been a privilege to observe and also be a part of that engagement. What is also fantastic is that there have been offline events where the enthusiast filmmaker and professional have been able to attend. An example of such an event was when Visual Impact hosted IndieLAB. The focus was on HDSLRs and they had a whole bunch of equipment out for us to drool over – never mind the talks – ha ha ha.

Anyway, the purpose about this blog is to highlight Visual Impact standing in the Local Filmmaking industry – for both sales and rentals, and of course how the Social Networking and HDSLRs have been influential to their business and success.
Read on to for some Questions and Answers with Visual Impact ….

Saw this over at Planet5D, not sure why I had not seen it before, hmmm. There is however enought time to participate: deadline is 31st March 2011.
The challenge is to put together one 3 minute scene; Fictional or Documentary, the only other condition is that (as you can judge by the name of the Film Festival) all your equipment must fit into your backpack. I wonder what they will say when they see a photo of my backpack with this huge tripop strapped on – yess you need to submit a photo as proof.
What can you win? Free Vimeo Plus accounts for the winners and a hint that there may be more.
So … are you going to enter?
Video amd more information after the jump.

Great HDSLR Resources

January 14, 2011 — Leave a comment

Here is a list of resources for HDSLR that I have found useful. Since I own a Canon 550D/T2i it has a flavour leaning towards that camera, however it is not exclusive to it.
Just to add a disclaimer: I have not read all the books listed here – I am not that mad. Also the links to items on Amazon contain Affiliate links that will benefit me only if you buy the item, probably only a book. Any money earned from it will be redirected to this blog.

The Camera

The Canon 550D/T2i is a great camera. It is not a full sensor camera like the Canon 5D Mark II
but the video ability is just as good. It is well priced and I have found that, as both a Stills camera and Video camera, it is an amazing tool. Granted, I have been more blown away by the awesome photographs I can take with it.
The trade-off comes in the form of the sensor size – affecting your choice of lenses or modifying angle of view of the lens by a factor of 1.6. Different frame rates and audio controls can be balanced with Magic Lantern‘s firmware ‘hack’. The APS-C sensor provides less of a Depth of Field but from my experience it is good enough, besides too much DOF can get annoying and it is hard to keep focus.

Here’s a Video shot with an iPhone4 with a Canon EF 50mm f1.8 DSLR lens on the EnCinema 35mm Adapter attached to the OWLE Bubo.
I am guessing that any lens could have been used within reason, but what is an OWLE Bubo?
I had to go and search around a bit.
Strange that there was not one available on B&H but I found one on Amazon. If you intent to buy through this link, it is $119.95 and it is an Amazon Associates Link so I’ll a little cash.

Ok, granted, USB 3.0 is quiet new and not many computers are fitted with support for USB 3.0.
However Host Adapters really jump the gun into the USB 3.0 world. For me it is a major consideration for my new Computer – whether I go Macbook Pro or iMac – where the iMac offers more processing power but the MBP offers better external storage choices like USB 3.0.

The CalDigit card was 20% better on Read and 40% better on Write speeds when compared to the Lacie card. Nice.
