Mark Spencer has a great 12 point list of what you can do to speed up Motion: Getting the Most out of Motion
Things like RAM, Thumbnails, Particles, Fixed Resolution, etc. I know that I will be trying out a few of the points in order to hopefully ramp up the performance of my MBP when working on Motion projects.
Although point 13 is missing: Use crazy spec’d Mac Pro with max RAM
