I posted a video on YouTube and Vimeo a few days ago:
Vimeo : http://www.vimeo.com/14333667 with almost 5000 views on vimeo
YouTube : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gpGqGNxtkSY with just over 150 views.
The same video. First Vimeo on the Sunday and then YouTube almost two days after that. Here are a few Observations:
Facebook is the Video Play King
According to the embed statistics of vimeo, people you load the video will most likely play the video:
Partial Embed statistics
Top URLs (Loads / Plays)
- synapticlight.com (2,292 / 0) – I can’t actually believe that over 2000 people loaded the page and did not bother to watch the video, I mean it is only 16 seconds.
- facebook.com (401 / 306) – that over 76%
- player.vimeo.com (0 / 415) – It is not clear how many people loaded the page but it must be in the region of 1000. So, I am assuming that 40 – 50% of the people who came to see the video on vimeo actually watched it.
What this show me is that if you want your video watched then sharing it on Facebook is the route to go.
Digg Means Nothing
I shared my Vimeo link on Digg and was able to get 13 diggs on the video itself. This was not an easy thing to do, there were special requests etc to get this right.
The YouTube video was also shared on Digg, not by myself, and it garnered 190 Diggs.
Here is the interesting thing. At this time there were 155 views on YouTube yet there were 190 Diggs. That means people just dugg for the sake of the Dugg. Also odd that so many diggs resulted in so little views of the video, while vimeo was the opposite.
Timing is everything
If I have not been stuck in traffic and had a Vimeo Plus account then I would have gotten the video up faster and would have probably doubled the loads and plays. Loading the video onto YouTube a few days later when it was not so ‘Fresh’ kind of watered down the effect. Being a current and locally relevant event it was always going to succeed better with better timing – regardless of the fact that people might find it a cool video in a years time.
Please feel free to share your thoughts.
