Archives For Filmmaking

All that I learn, think about and experience in my journey to be a Filmmaker. This includes all aspects of filmmaking from conception to production; planning, filming, visual effects, editing and color correction. Also includes all the cool equipment and softawe associated with these aspects of filmmaking.

Another cool Canon 60D Competition, this one restricted to residents of Western Australia and being 16 years or older. See here for the rules (pdf).
To enter, visit www.thewest.com.au/thebelltower and submit your photo of the Bell Tower. It appears that the photo does not have to be recent; just within the last 10 yrs.

For interest’s sake the other Canon 60D competition is one restricted to Citizens or Permanent Residents at least 18 years of age, living in South & South East Asia.
This competition is part of the celebration of the 10 year anniversary of Perth’s iconic and major tourist attraction, the Bell Tower.
If you enter let me know.
And if you know of any other HDSLR competitions. I would love an opportunity to have a go :)

What is Apple thinking by not adding USB 3.0 support in the new Macs? This could have been understandable (to a degree) is FW1600/3200 was added instead. Still, there are some cool USB 3.0 products out there.

Another month and another cool set of top ten posts. Please check them out and comment. I was surprised not to see the Athlone Towers post in the top 10; it outshone every other post in the last 2 months – what an awesome video – it still remains top overall, as you can see in the sidebar.
I am hoping that next month my Movember posts will be in the top 10 – perhaps you can help me out.

  1. The Panasonic AF100 is not an HDSLR Killer
  2. Lets face it, the Panasonic AF100 is not an HDSLR killer in general. Maybe if the Canon 5D Mark2 was a little more expensive and the AF100 a little bit cheaper then yes. But the reason why HDSLRs are here to say and not be threatened by the likes of the AF100 is it’s affordability even inspite of all the accessories that may be needed.

  3. Win a Canon 60D
  4. Jumped the gun on this one. It seems that this competition is for peeps from the Asian continent. Oh well. I’ll keep looking for a truly international contest so that I can share it.

  5. Vimeo Awards Winner: Documentary
  6. Very well filmed documentary that was certainly tear jerking. Deserving winner.

  7. Anatomy of an HDSLR Rig
  8. Getting into HDSLR is not just a simple body buy with a cheap lens; there are other factors involved. This diagram helps you identify the components that could find their place on your rig.

  9. Production and Workflow : The Enemy God
  10. Great movie. Here is a well detailed discussion with the Producer and editor of the film about the equipment and the workflows employed in the film.

  11. Filmmaking Facebook Group
  12. Created a Facebook Filmmaking Group. Please stop by, be nice, and take part in the shaing and discusion of all aspects related to filmmaking.

  13. Get it made Competition
  14. I love film contests, this is a cool one – check it out.

  15. The #HDSLR Daily
  16. I set up a Daily gathering of all twitter messages and media with the tag HDSLR. It’s kind of like a daily newspaper.

  17. SAVE Blue Like Jazz – the movie
  18. So cool that they finally raised the money for this film. It is based on a very good book by Donald Miller that I read and enjoyed. They in fact raise double the amount intended. A great example of crowd funding done right.

  19. Vimeo Awards Winner: Motion Graphics
  20. Wow, a crazy motion graphic sequence that looks a bit more like animation, Almost eerie.

Supporting Movember

October 29, 2010 — 2 Comments

SynapticLight will be supporting Movember over and above the involvement I will have personally. You can find more about Movember from the Movember Website; therein their facebook page. I have also set up a local Facebook group if you are in Cape Town (South Africa).

How will SynapticLight Support Movember

There will be two ways that we can create awareness and raise funds. First by making fun videos related to Movember mustaches as wells as to the meat of the fund – raising awareness for The Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA).
Second to actually raise funds.

I saw this commercial on Live for Films – the article was about Deadpool’s possible new Director: Adam Berg. Adam has only directed Commercials so far – can he translate his skill to a full length feature? hmmm.
Here is a very cool commercial that he did followed by another video explaining how it is done. I wonder if we will see this long bullet time sequence effect employed in Deadpool.

As part of the Dream the Impossible Dream, Documentary Series, this Honda advert shows some interesting people talking about their journeys into the unknown.

Have you every Dreamed the Impossible, the Unknown? or, what you thought was impossible? Would that include making a film?

The Panasonic AF100 is an HDSLR Killer??

Where did this come from? It’s the same as saying that my Rump Steak is better than your Apple Pie.
What is that saying? Compare Apples vs Apple.

The #HDSLR Daily

October 18, 2010 — 1 Comment

The HDSLR Paper.li is great for keeping up to date with any popular and interesting tweets using the #HDSLR tag. It gets published daily, so it is only once a day (no spamming).
It also has embedded rich media content – for example: videos where HDSLRs were used.
Check it out and please share, and promote :)

It looks to be a great documentary (from what I can see from the trailer), well put together, professional and very relevant. What the guys are doing to bring out the creativity in the kids, getting them involved and interested in something important. Kids that are caught up in streets of violence.
