Archives For Filmmaking

All that I learn, think about and experience in my journey to be a Filmmaker. This includes all aspects of filmmaking from conception to production; planning, filming, visual effects, editing and color correction. Also includes all the cool equipment and softawe associated with these aspects of filmmaking.

Sketchpad is a storyboard for the iPad. It’s for an artist and filmmakers who want a convenient, visual way to plan out their ideas for their next film. Its feels, functions and design just like the concept of storyboarding that gives you an experience unlike anything you’ve ever experienced.

This looks to be a great tool for filmmakers, especially independant filmakers.
Storyboarding has always been a stumbling block for me, I am not a good sketcher and once I have made a mistake it is not easy to fix (mess at the best of times). I could use a normal PC/Mac app but that is not always practical.

Enter Sketchpad.

Here’s an app that offers great tools and what looks to be a great interface.

NukeX6.2
My favourite “Wish I had” software has just go a version upgrade to NukeX6.2, adding some cool and anticipated features.

This new major release encompasses artist feedback to deliver continued refinements to core operations whilst also incorporating the latest technology to emerge from The Foundry’s highly regarded in-house research team. New image-based modeling and projection tools advance artists’ ability to create and use scene geometry in their visual effects.

An oldie, but a goodie, that I saw on Planet5D Blog: The difference between the full frame and crop sensors.
Since I am getting a Canon 550D in a few days, I though that I needed to watch this.
One of the most important things to consider with HDSLRs is Lens selection – especially when working with a crop sensor as the 550D has.
Now, I guess, that most people who have a 550D or any crop sensor camera would want to replace the body in the furture with, most possibly, a camera with full frame sensor.
This video illustrates the difference that senor makes on the image with the lenses. It is important to know that lenses designed for full frame will have a narrower angle on a crop sensor and a lens for a crop sensor camera will be blurred on the edges when used on a full frame camera.
So the best idea would be to stick to the non crop lenses and just adjust your choices.
A 50mm on a 550D would actually be an 80mm.

First public footage of a working Red Scarlet Fixed Lens camera.
Awesome!!!
Would love to play around with one of these babies even with a fixed lens and it’s 2/3″ sensor.
Thanks to Stu Maschwitz’s Scarlet post on Pro Lost.

This is the very first public footage of a working Red Scarlet Fixed Lens camera. I’m currently at Red Studios helping with the Santa Fe 3d Workshop with Geoff Boyle. Just as I am sitting there…in comes Jarred with a WORKING Red Scarlet 8X fixed camera! Naturally I was dying to hold the camera. As Jarred passed it to me, he told me I was the first public person to hold a working Red Scarlet. Let me tell you folks, it is real and is working. The Scarlet I was holding had the 5inch lcd touchscreen. The lens gear ring which can be set to zoom, iris or focus is buttery smooth. QUALITY. The electronic zoom works like a charm. I used the up-down rocker on the camera to zoom in on a Jeep in the parking lot (though I was “Mr. Shakey” due to the sheer excitement of finally getting to hold the Red Scarlet.) Justin O’Neill and I got to see it for a mere brief moment and off it went back to the vault. This should be comforting to those who may fear that RED wouldn’t have time for the Scarlet with all the Epic buzz going on. This gives me more confidence that the Red Scarlet is definitely around the corner. I have been really lucky to have held both the Epic and Scarlet. The Scarlet is lighter in weight than the Epic even with the fixed lens. This is due to the Scarlet body being more narrow. The weight felt very good and the camera felt rugged. Touch screen controls were functional. Enjoy!

Canon Filmmakers Live (featuring Philip Bloom) will be touring to 12 cities in the United States (man, I wish I could be there).
quoted from CanonFilmmakersLive

Philip Bloom, DSLR evangilist, will be visiting 12 cities across the US and showing you just how to get the best out of your DSLR… Everything from camera setup to post workflow. He’ll also be covering the latest gear and cameras, including the new large chip video cameras.

This will not be your typical, dry, hotel seminar… This will be fun, entertaining, and of course educational. Come get involved! Our workshops are interactive and this is your chance to ask Philip directly the questions you’ve always wanted to.

If you want to go to one of these events at one of the 12 cities then all you have to do is win a very simple contest.
Easily said, eh ;)
All you have to do is create a unique/funny/awesome 30 second video expressing how much you want to go. With a single catch – each city will have a theme associated with it (announced a week before submissions are due) that the videos will need to comply to.

Seems that you can use any video hosting platform to upload your videos to. Once that is done then you link to the video in the comments section of CanonFilmmakersLive.

30 seconds.
how hard can it be?
go for it.

Moleskin Film Journal

moleskin film journal
This is really cool – especially if you like to document your thoughts of films you have seen. It looks quite flexible in the way you can put your thoughts down with different sections, blank pages and separate adhesive labels.
Check out the Moleskin Film Journal. I was quite impressed that it was in a local bookstore – just one mind you.
If you are going to a film festival and you want to take notes, this should be your journal of choice.
