Water

You know there are a lot of opportunities out there to be involved in to bring smile on the faces of people that need.

CharityWater is a great opportunity to help bring water to communities that need it – and need it in a big way.

If you want to be involved in my campaign to raise $5000 by 30:12:09 then check it out here:

If you are in the film industry then you know about the amount of water that can be consumed in the day of a single shoot, forget the drinking – how much water is wasted in Special Effects for rain or flood. If everyone involved in a film would donate just $1 then we could help so many people that do not have access to clean water.

I have started a campaign, prompted by the same campaigns by people I respect on the interwebs – ho props to them:

I hope we all succeed.

The Journey Begins: Filmmaking

As all in the indie – low/no budget arena and especially in the major crazy budget  feature film arena, know; filmmaking is a process, a journey and a collaboration. Last night a journey began in the informal lounge of a garden suburb of Cape Town South Africa. Sitting around a table, three eager adventurers plotted and planned the route through the challenging landscape of filmmaking. Over cups of coffee and tea they discussed ideas, roles and what to do. Needless to say there were some some crazy ideas – what would you expect from a Computer Programmer, a Fishmonger and a Stuntman.

What this space.

My Problem with Idolatry (The Red Apple)

Yip, I admit it – I have a problem.

I am weak.

What can you expect from a work in progress.

Too much of my time is spend desiring and dreaming about an awesome RED One camera System and a hardcore Mac Pro Editing Setup. There we go; I said awesome and hardcore in one sentence.

Hmmmm.

How to Burn Blu-Rays With FCP 7

Here a great account on Apple’s new Blu-Ray capabilities in Final Cut Pro 7. I just wish they would put together a Blu-Ray Authoring Application – personally I just don’t see HD distribution being dominated by the online mechanism – I sure aint streaming 50GB and anything less is doing the content injustice.

Video Promo for Church Re-Brand

NewNameTeaserNot often do you find a well established church going through the process of re-branding and re-naming.

Our Church is :-)

How cool is that?

A number of years ago we recognized the importance of brand and developed our logo, tagline, vision, mission, etc. Continue Reading…

Editing Basics

City on a Hill Productions has this great video tutorial on editing basics using Final Cut Pro. And they use film to talk about faith which is awesome.

Bluescreen – Canon XH A1

Some time back we had the pleasure and convenience of a studio. It was cool and quick. But I have to say that it could have been better:

Filmed with a Canon XH A1 with inferior lighting and edge enhancing. Keyed in Shake. It could have been way better if:

  • Lighting was 3500% better
  • Edge detail was reduced
  • if SDI out was used to leverage the 4:2:2 color sampling

Anyway, I did not go thru that much effort to obtain this result, but needless to say ….

Also, man it is irritating that the gamma is increased somewhere in the pipeline to compress the result to vimeo. Hmmm, I manually fixed that in the compression settings – but I did not get the result I desired.

Shake Keying Tutorials

When I started the fine art of Keying I did much searching for good tutorials. In the end I happened upon Andrew Shanks from Creative Cow.

Andrew isa Visual Effects Compositor/Supervisor based in Auckland, New Zealand“. Very Cool. So I reckon that he knows about keying.

These are the video tutorials that I keep close at hand with the process and principle that I apply pretty much to all my keying projects in Shake. They are based on DV examples, but can be applied to HDV footage, with slight modification if you have the pleasure of working with 4:2:2.

Twitter and Filmmaking

tech-icons_inverse_no_circletwitter-bird-5

Anyone who has made a movie/film can tell you that it involves a huge amount of collaboration, interaction and delegation. For the amount of people involved the channels of communication need to be tight, open and well oiled. So to speak.
Now I am not an expert and I am using the term Film Making very loosely because what I am about to suggest covers many aspects of film and video content creation from Motion Graphics to mash-ups to home videos to professional film.

I have been reading a book called Tribes by Seth Godin as well participating in a Group Blogging Project where a certain blogger blogs about a number of pages – discussing the topics contained there in (Check here for my contribution: So why do it?).
This has been incredibly challenging to me. With this in mind I have thought much about making the right connections with people in the industry – particularly Christians (but not restricted to). The most successful tool for me in establishing these connections has been twitter, so it got me thinking -

How can Twitter help Filmmaking?

What Do you think? How can Twitter help?

Which Video Camera is best for Bluescreen

Well bluescreen or greenscreen.
I have used the following:

  • Panasonic AG-DVX100BE
  • Sony EX-1
  • Canon XH-A1

I would like to have use a Panasonic HVX200A or maybe the Sony EX-3 or the Panasonic HPX170.

But what is the best camera to us for recording content for green or blue screen? Not just from the selection above. Not just in the price range inferred from the section.
What do you think is the best camera?
