The Quest: adidas Football (2010 World Cup)

This is it.
The FIFA 2010 World Cup in South Africa is climaxing tonight with the Spain vs Netherlands final. I have chosen Spain as my team in this match although it seems that there is a lot of local support for Holland. But there is something about Spain. I think that The two teams play a similar style football but Spain is more of a team, more clinical and more aware of the game as a whole.
Here is the adidas Football quest, here is the final destination. I like table mountain in the shot :)
Some if the football moves in the movie looks a bit like Shaolin Soccer, ever seen that? ;)

Friday Filmmaking Links (3D)

Sprockets
So many things heading towards 3D, as if High Definition acquisition and broadcasting was not enough. I wonder what will come after 3D.

  • Lights, camera, action… – FIFA’s Soccer World Cup 3D cameras. I am here in Cape Town, South Africa, and watching the world cup. I have to hang my head in shame as I say that I have not seen a game in 3D – let alone seen the cameras used to capture the action in 3D.
  • Stereoscopic Storm – NAB 3D Cameras : Some of the cameras and units used to give cameras 3D capability. Those rigs look seriously big.
  • Professional 46-Inch 3D Display Monitor : A great screen to preview your 3D editing content.
  • Sony’s 3D World: Well since Sony is supplying the cameras for 3D acquisition at the World Cup, here is their website.

Star Wars and the 2010 Soccer World Cup

Staying on the theme of the 2010 Soccer World Cup being held here in South Africa (the final in 2 days; go Spain) and some good compositing to put actors into popular films – after the fact.
Here we have Star Wars and adidas Originals teaming up to great some interesting videos, including peeps like Snoop Dogg, David Beckham, Calle 13, DJ Neil Armstrong and Daft Punk.
Awesome.

The Ever Democratization of Filmmaking

online video channels

Never before has there been such great distribution of independent and low budget content. People of every level of expertise, talent and budget are able to promote and distribute their content almost at will. There are both positive and negative aspects to this, you can see it as the Win and the Reversal. I thought I might talk about this in a way that would lead to what I hope to achieve in in this blog – that of using social media and networking to make connections, relationships and build trust with filmmakers that are on any level. That way we can learn together and perhaps even work together.

Equipment

We know that Computers, Software and Cameras are becoming cheaper; well it seems like a slippery slope with Software and even new Cameras making more demands on other hardware. Be that as it may, anyone can make a film now. It does not really require a RED Epic, an 8 core Mac Pro with Media Composer 5, NukeX and Cinema4D – that’s just what you end up dreaming about. Do a search on Google and you’ll find hundreds of suggestions on cheap cameras, editing software and computers. If you are reading this then you are probably somewhere between that and whatever you dream about. (more…)

YouTube: Filmmakers Wanted

YouTube: Filmmakers Wanted

Want to rent out the films you have created? Interesting thing that YouTube has done is put together a way for filmmakers to earn some cash.
Enter YouTube Rentals – YouTube is looking for Filmmakers :)
The idea is great, apart from the income that it may generate it is certainly a great channel to meet other filmmakers and to get recognized.
Will you be adding your content? Have you, and did you get any income?

iPhone 4 HD Movie

iphone4 used in film

True mobile filmmaking is here, well kind of.
The device that houses the camera, contains the editing application.
The device that has the editing application has the ability to distribute the finished content.
The device that can distribute, is mobile and connected.
wow.

Ok, granted in this example, we have a very professional approach to the filmmaking process. This video was not slapped together on a wim; it was planned and production was on par with normal film production practices – just check the behind the scenes.
One take home here is that you can make a good film by applying time honoured practices in spite of the camera.
What do you think? (more…)

Tyro TV: a Site for Emerging Television and Filmmakers

tyro festival

Tyro: A beginner in learning anything; novice.
With cheaper and easier ways to create content and distribute (especially through online mechanisms like YouTube and Vimeo) there will be a lot of Tyro Film makers out there.
As Tyro filmmakers we want to get involved in competitions in order to express ourselves and hopefully win something to take our dreams to the next level. Yet the stumbling block is the gathering of content footage. Either we get stuck on the planning stage, trying to figure out what to film or we can’t get organized to actually film the content.
Tyro, looks to make the process even easier for new film makers to get going – they provide the content for you. You just take the tools that you have and make the film, submit and then you are done: (more…)

Make a Short Film for Blockbuster Writer and Producer Steven E. de Souza

steve de souza competition

Award winning screenwriter and producer, Steven E. de Souza, whose credits include blockbusters such as genre-setting action films Die Hard and 48hrs, has partnered with Talenthouse to provide a fantastic opportunity for aspiring filmmakers.

Steven is hosting a Creative Invite (project) that is searching for filmmakers, who would like to collaborate with him on his Webby Award winning web suspense series Unknown Sender. He is asking interested filmmakers to produce their own short films that will be used as new episodes.

To be considered for this opportunity, filmmakers are asked to visit TalentHouse, select one of four scripts, produce the episode based upon the script and then submit the finished film to Talenthouse.
